Homeschooling takes on many forms. There are homeschoolers that use an eclectic style, those that unschool, those that use prepackaged curriculums and still others that rely on distance education to supplement hands-on instruction.

Home schooling has come a long way in the last few decades and new homeschoolers are bombarded with educational options. The newness of online classes and the learning curve many homeschooling parents have to go through in the beginning, can make online classes an overlooked resource. Online classes benefit homeschoolers in different ways based on how their homeschool is run.

When students get older, some subjects become too difficult for parents to teach. On the other hand, some students require help beyond what a parent can provide. This is where online classes can benefit both parents and students who home educate. Both schools and organizations provide opportunities to take classes online. Students can continue their traditional from of homeschooling but supplement with online classes for certain subjects. Some subjects that homeschoolers can consider for an online class are geometry, physics, algebra and government. Students can also enroll in online writing classes if they struggle with learning proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

A particularly helpful advantage of online classes for homeschoolers is that parents get a little backup when it comes to teaching their child. Most homeschoolers deal with uncertainty at some point, especially in the beginning. Having an outside resource can calm instructional fears parents may be feeling. Instructors vary in their methods and your child may click with an online class instructor in an area they have been struggling in at home. It also gives parents the option of discussing their child’s education with the online class instructor to assess strengths and weaknesses. Some online classes require a test before the student can enroll in the class. These tests, which are usually provided free of charge if the student is enrolling, is an easy way for parents to see if their home education program is on track and working well.

Among the most significant benefits of online classes for homeschoolers is that older students can self-direct their learning. This teaches responsibility and time management skills. It also frees up the parent to work with younger kids, run errands or spend time doing something around the house. With online classes, parents get a little bit more freedom from the rigors of homeschooling. Online classes also show colleges that the student can perform well not only in their home education subjects, but also in subjects provided by a school or organization. This may help the student when applying for college or college scholarships.

The prospect of earning transferable credits is another benefit of online classes for homeschoolers. Homeschoolers are required to maintain their own records and transcripts. With some online classes, the credit earned are put on an accredited transcript which makes them transferable if a student re-enter public school or goes to college.

Most homeschooling families prefer to be in charge of their home education program, while others enjoy the option of distance education for homeschooling.

The number of parents that choose to enroll their child online for home schooling is expanding. Its popularity among other parents and parents-to-be is vastly increasing. Some parents want it because it is more convenient when it comes to the financial aspects. Some parents do not have enough money to be able to send their children to private schools.

With each passing year, tuition fees are soaring. No wonder many parents insist on not bringing their child to school but there are more reasons. There are some advantages as well as disadvantages to home schooling. But it is still up to you which school to choose. One reason why many people enroll their children to this kind of schooling is that they have more control. Control on what? It is control on the subjects and lessons to learn and the control on whom you want to influence your children.

Quality education is every parent’s desire for their kids. Some people think that they will be able to teach their child more when he’s taught at home rather than in the school itself. Moreover, some say that they could choose the subjects to focus on and properly incorporate them in their children’s minds.

After all, some schools have that lack of input and other factors as well that could hinder their learning needs. In addition, some parents point out that they can be in charge of the curriculum, as well as go to the easy lessons and focus on harder subjects. Furthermore, some schools do not have very efficient teachers with appropriate teaching methods.

Aside from the control over the educational process, some parents who have chosen to home school their child believe that they are actually getting a far more enhanced course of education. In this way, they are given assurance that they are properly and effectively taught and educated. Moreover, they believe that the parent-children bond is strengthened and the family ties are kept intact. They believe that it enriches their relationship with one another.

On the other hand, some people say that home schooling may harm or endanger a child’s social interaction as well as their emotional relationship with other people. They believe that there are opportunities that may cause certain social problems. With those mentioned above, there are many schools that are computer-aided. Various associations and organizations have created home schooling that provides computer-aided instruction. You can visits some sites online and to find these organizations. It is good that you canvass first and be aware of their rules, policies, and regulations.

Look for their accreditations. See also if they have activities and events that may give you more information on their curriculum and with this, you can make your decision. It is predicted that home schooling will be become more popular and will be utilized more towards achieving quality education that every child needs and wants.

1. Setting the Bar Too Low

Research has shown that one of the greatest determining factors in a student’s performance is teacher expectation. This is no different for your homeschool student. You may think the world of your little angel, but every parent has their biases. Admit it. Maybe it has crossed your mind that while Bobby is a genius in math, he really struggles at reading. Perhaps Emma loves to read aloud, but she isn’t the best with numbers. Don’t feel bad, every parent has preconceived ideas about their child’s ability and you are no different. However, in order for your student to reach their full potential, it is imperative that you set aside any notions you have about their ability and go into every lesson knowing that they will succeed. When you expect the best, you get the best.

2. Teaching the Way YOU Liked to Learn

You may have heard from others, or experienced yourself, that certain types of teaching styles are more successful than others. I understand this firsthand. Those of us with a lesser ability to navigate the roads may need to look at a map to find our way. Other may not retain those directions until they have driven the route themselves. You might find that when you read something it doesn’t “stick”, but when you attend a lecture or have a friend explains it to you, everything becomes crystal clear. Everyone learns differently. Don’t expect that because you learned best when shown pictures, that the same is true for your child. Experiment with different styles of teaching and ask for your child’s input to help you figure out what works best for them.

3. Ignoring Classroom Management

-“I want the classroom to be a place where my child can explore and learn freely, I don’t want the rules to prevent them from exploring.”

-“I don’t need to go over the rules! My child is always well behaved.”

Parents think that because they have already established a discipline system in their home, with rules and consequences, that there is no need to come up with similar strategies for class time. Well they are wrong. Class time needs to be separated out from your regular at home activity. Rules and routines specific to the classroom need to be put in place so that it is clear for both the student and teacher what is acceptable during learning time. School rules and routines provide for maximum learning time, so don’t leave them out of your plans.

4. Teaching 1 Thing at a Time

When you plan your schedule for each day, do you break up your time by subject? Reading from 8-9, math from 9-10, etc. Of course you do, who doesn’t? This isn’t a bad way to schedule your time either, as long as you have a big picture in mind. Your child will be better able to retain all the subjects that you teach if they are interrelated. If you design units of study with a big picture or theme that applies to math, reading and science, they will retain more and have more fun in the process. For example: if you want your 7 year old to understand that animals have predictable lifecycles don’t just teach it during science time. Use books on the topic during reading. Teach multiplication using frog legs (5 frogs with 4 legs each…how many legs in all).

5. Teaching is Telling

This is a pretty basic mistake, but one that I still hear about all the time. Parents explain a something new to their student and don’t understand why it doesn’t “stick”. The simple answer is that teaching is not just telling. If you want to be a good teacher, as we all do, you need to learn a variety of ways to teach your child. There is hands-on learning, inquiry learning, visual aids, reciprocal teaching, and technology-based learning. I could go on and on with different ways of instructing that can improve your child’s learning, I have a great deal of training and experience in this area that I use on a daily basis in my own home, but the important thing is that you know that part of teaching is learning. You need to constantly be seeking out new techniques and tools to improve your skills. As you improve so will your child.
